Sophia International Academy – A Japanese Language School Offering Comprehensive Education and Strong Student Support

1. Development Journey and Core Values

Sophia International Academy was established and is operated by a team of experienced Japanese language educators with the goal of creating an optimal learning environment tailored to each student's individual objectives. The school embraces a comprehensive educational philosophy that goes beyond language instruction. In addition to helping students develop Japanese proficiency, it places great emphasis on future career planning, life skills, and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and society.

The teaching staff work closely with students throughout their academic journey, providing guidance on university applications, document preparation, and job interview practice, ensuring that every student receives personalised support.

To enrich both education and research, the school has expanded beyond its main campus by establishing specialised research centres that offer students unique learning experiences in different natural environments.

  • Main Campus (Yokohama): 2F, 1-11 Chitosecho, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa 231-0035, Japan

  • Mountain Research Centre: Yatsugatake Kogen, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture

  • Marine Research Centre: O-hama-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture

2. Courses and Tuition Fees

Sophia International Academy offers both morning and afternoon classes. Students are assigned to classes based on the results of a placement test taken before enrolment. This system allows learners to study at an appropriate pace without feeling overwhelmed or falling behind, while also giving them greater flexibility to manage part-time work and daily life in Japan.

For residents of Japan who do not hold a Student Visa, the school also offers flexible short-term Japanese language courses throughout the year.

The following table provides an overview of the tuition fees:

Fee Item Amount (JPY)
Short-term Course (3 months, including textbooks and learning materials) 160,000
First-year Tuition Fee (Applicable to both morning and afternoon courses) Please contact the school directly

Note: From the second year onwards, tuition fees vary depending on the specific course selected by the student.

3. Learning Environment and Student Accommodation

The school's classrooms are equipped with modern teaching facilities designed to support effective interaction between teachers and students. In addition to the main campus in Yokohama, the mountain research centre in Nagano and the marine research centre in Nagasaki provide unique experiential learning opportunities where students can broaden their perspectives while enjoying different environments.

Accommodation is also carefully arranged through a network of apartments and residences located close to the school, making daily commuting convenient. The surrounding neighbourhood offers essential amenities such as convenience stores, banks, and other services that help students settle comfortably into life in Japan.

Key features of the accommodation include:

  • Shared rooms for two or more students.

  • Separate accommodation arrangements for male and female students.

  • Fully furnished apartments equipped with essential household appliances, including washing machines, refrigerators, and basic kitchen utensils.

  • Students are required to stay in the designated accommodation for the first six months after arrival to ensure a smooth transition into their new environment.

4. Student Support and Campus Life

Sophia International Academy provides comprehensive support covering both academic studies and daily life, helping international students adapt quickly to living in Japan.

The school regularly organises guidance sessions covering administrative procedures, health insurance, and advice on finding part-time employment that complies with Japanese regulations.

Outside the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including excursions, sports festivals, and international cultural exchange events. These activities help reduce academic stress, strengthen friendships, and create unforgettable memories throughout students' time in Japan.

5. Why Choose Sophia International Academy?

Sophia International Academy offers several practical advantages for students seeking to improve their Japanese language skills while preparing for future academic or professional opportunities.

  • Excellent Location: Situated in central Yokohama, the school provides easy access to popular attractions such as Minato Mirai, Yokohama Cosmo World, and the historic Red Brick Warehouse, allowing students to experience Japanese culture beyond the classroom.

  • A Welcoming Multicultural Environment: Accommodation arrangements often place students from the same country together during the initial adjustment period, while school-wide activities encourage interaction with classmates from diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Practical Teaching Approach: Lessons incorporate current social issues and real-life topics, encouraging students to think critically and communicate naturally in Japanese rather than relying on memorisation. This practical approach provides a solid foundation for higher education and long-term careers in Japan.
