DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR STUDYING AT A CHINESE UNIVERSITY / COLLEGE: A–Z GUIDE

Người đăng: Tohoku Sông Đà Công ty cổ phần - 17/08/2026

Students planning to study at a university or college in China generally need to prepare documents in four stages: personal documents → admission documents → visa application documents → documents and procedures after entering China.

Preparing all documents accurately and well in advance can help minimise requests for additional documents, corrections and delays during the application process.

1. PERSONAL DOCUMENTS

Document Basic requirements
Passport Original passport with sufficient validity
Citizen ID card Copy
Passport photos As required by the university and visa application
Birth certificate Copy or certified copy, where required
Personal profile/CV Complete and accurate personal information
Medical examination certificate If required by the university or programme
Other documents Depending on the university, major and programme

Some documents may need to be translated, notarised or certified before submission. Students should check the specific requirements of their chosen university before finalising their application.

2. ACADEMIC DOCUMENTS FOR ADMISSION

For students applying for undergraduate programmes

The following documents are generally required:

  • High school graduation certificate or temporary graduation certificate.

  • High school academic transcripts.

  • Academic records as required by the university.

  • HSK certificate, if required by the programme.

  • English-language certificates such as IELTS or TOEFL if applying for an English-taught programme and required by the university.

  • Certificates of academic achievements, awards or relevant qualifications, where applicable.

  • Study plan or personal statement, if required by the university or programme.

For college programmes

Depending on the programme, applicants may need to provide:

  • High school graduation certificate.

  • High school academic transcripts.

  • Language certificates as required.

  • Other personal and academic documents specified by the university.

Important: Admission requirements, academic grade requirements and HSK requirements may vary between universities and majors. Students should check the specific admission requirements of their chosen institution before submitting an application.

3. FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS

Depending on the university, study programme or scholarship, students may be required to provide evidence of their financial capacity.

Common documents may include:

  • Bank balance certificate.

  • Bank account statements.

  • Documents proving the financial capacity of the sponsor.

  • Documents proving the relationship between the student and the sponsor.

  • Scholarship award certificate, if applicable.

Not all universities have the same financial requirements. Students should prepare these documents according to the specific requirements of their chosen university and programme.

4. ADMISSION DOCUMENTS AFTER ACCEPTANCE

Once the university has approved the application, students will generally receive important documents such as:

Admission Notice

The Admission Notice confirms that the student has been accepted by a Chinese educational institution.

JW201 or JW202

For long-term study programmes requiring an X1 visa, students should also pay attention to the JW201/JW202 – Visa Application for Study in China.

For an X1 visa application, students generally need to provide the Admission Notice together with JW201/JW202, where applicable.

5. CHINESE STUDENT VISA APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

X1 Visa – Study for more than 180 days

The X1 visa is generally used for students enrolling in undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral or long-term Chinese-language programmes lasting more than 180 days.

Basic documents include:

Document Details
Passport Original and copy
Chinese visa application form Completed according to current requirements
Visa photograph Photo meeting the required specifications
Admission Notice Admission document issued by the university
JW201/JW202 Where required for X1 visa applicants
Other relevant documents If requested by the relevant authority

A four-year undergraduate programme clearly exceeds 180 days. Therefore, students should generally consider the X1 visa rather than the X2 visa.

X2 Visa – Study for no more than 180 days

The X2 visa is used for study programmes in China lasting no more than 180 days.

Examples may include:

  • Short-term Chinese-language courses.

  • Exchange programmes.

  • One-semester study programmes.

  • Short-term training or professional programmes.

  • University summer programmes.

X2 visa applications generally require an Admission Notice and other relevant documents requested by the visa application authority.

6. PROCEDURES AFTER ENTERING CHINA

This is an important stage that both students and parents should pay particular attention to.

Students entering China with an X1 visa are entering for long-term study purposes. After entering China, X1 visa holders generally need to apply for a Residence Permit in accordance with local regulations, normally within 30 days of entry.

The university will generally provide guidance on residence procedures, enrolment, accommodation and other related matters.

Academic documents: For X1 applications, check that the Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 are available where required.

Post-arrival procedures: Students travelling under an X1 visa should work closely with their university to complete the Residence Permit procedure within the required timeframe.

9. SUMMARY: WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED TO STUDY IN CHINA?

The entire process can be divided into four main stages:

Personal documents → Admission documents → Visa application documents → Post-arrival procedures

For students applying to a four-year undergraduate programme in China, the X1 visa is generally the relevant visa category to consider.

However, the visa is only one part of the preparation process. Academic documents, personal documents, the Admission Notice, JW201/JW202 and post-arrival residence procedures all need to be prepared accurately and within the required timeframe.

Document requirements and procedures may be updated from time to time. Students should check the latest requirements of their chosen university and the relevant Chinese visa application authority before submitting their official application.
