Vietnamese international students and workers who have recently arrived in South Korea need to complete various procedures relating to their residence status, address and passport. Here are five common mistakes to avoid.
-
Not checking the information on your Residence Card
When you receive your Residence Card, check the following information carefully:
-
Full name
-
Date of birth
-
Nationality
-
Status of stay
-
Period of stay
If you find any incorrect information, contact the relevant immigration authority for guidance rather than ignoring it.
-
Moving house without reporting your new address
If you move to a new address, check whether you are required to report the change of residence.
According to guidance from the South Korean Ministry of Justice, registered foreign residents are generally required to report a change of residence within 15 days of moving to the new address.
Depending on the circumstances, the procedure can be completed at the relevant administrative office or online through HiKorea.
Keep the following documents:
-
Tenancy agreement
-
Proof of residence
-
Documents confirming your new address
-
Updating your passport but not your registered information
If you obtain a new passport, check whether you are required to update your passport details in your immigration records.
It is advisable to keep:
-
Your new passport
-
Your old passport, if available
-
Your Residence Card
-
Documents relating to the issue of your new passport
Obtaining a new passport does not necessarily mean that your immigration information will be updated automatically.
-
Not keeping copies of important documents
Keep scans or clear photographs of the following important documents:
-
Passport
-
Residence Card
-
Visa and residence-status documents
-
Tenancy agreement
-
School-related documents
-
Employment contract
-
Insurance documents
Store electronic copies securely. Do not send documents containing personal information to people who do not need them, or post them publicly online.
-
Forgetting to check your period of stay
Do not only check your passport expiry date. You should also keep track of your permitted period of stay in South Korea.
Check the following in advance:
-
Expiry date of your period of stay
-
Current status of stay
-
Requirements for extending your stay
-
Required documents
-
When you need to submit the application
Do not wait until your stay is about to expire before preparing the necessary documents.
