HSK 3, HSK 4 AND HSK 5: WHICH LEVEL SHOULD YOU ACHIEVE BEFORE APPLYING TO STUDY IN CHINA?

Người đăng: Tohoku Sông Đà Công ty cổ phần - 19/10/2026

When researching study opportunities in China, one of the questions students often ask is which HSK level they need to meet university admission requirements. HSK 3, HSK 4 and HSK 5 represent different levels of Chinese proficiency, but not all universities apply the same language requirements.

Identifying the appropriate language level from the outset will help students choose a suitable programme and prepare their application in advance.

1. What are the differences between HSK 3, HSK 4 and HSK 5?

HSK is a Chinese language proficiency test for people whose first language is not Chinese. The following is a general overview of HSK Levels 3, 4 and 5.

HSK 3 – A foundation for everyday Chinese communication

At this level, learners can handle some familiar situations in everyday life and basic communication. It provides a foundation for further developing Chinese language skills.

However, HSK 3 may not meet the admission requirements of many undergraduate programmes taught in Chinese. Students should check whether their chosen university offers a Chinese language preparatory course or a language programme for international students.

HSK 4 – A level worth targeting when preparing an undergraduate application

HSK 4 is an admission requirement for some undergraduate programmes taught in Chinese. For example, according to its 2026 admissions guidelines, Central South University requires applicants to certain science and engineering programmes to achieve HSK 4 with a minimum score of 260. Beijing Language and Culture University has programmes that specify HSK 4 with a minimum score of 180.

This demonstrates that students need to check not only the required HSK level but also the minimum score set by the university.

HSK 5 – An advantage when applying to a wider range of degree programmes

HSK 5 is a worthwhile target for students who wish to enter undergraduate programmes with higher Chinese language requirements, particularly in fields that require students to read academic materials and understand specialised lectures.

Some universities require HSK 5 for many undergraduate programmes taught in Chinese. For example, East China Normal University specifies HSK 5 with a minimum score of 180 for many programmes, while certain programmes have their own requirements.

2. Can students apply to study in China without HSK 4?

Yes, depending on the programme and the admission requirements of the university.

Students who do not yet hold an HSK certificate can explore the following options:

  • Chinese preparatory programmes before starting a degree, where available.

  • Chinese language programmes for international students.

  • Degree programmes taught in English, provided applicants meet the relevant language and admission requirements.

  • Programmes with specific Chinese language requirements or provisions allowing students to submit a language certificate under certain conditions.

For degree programmes taught in English, students should check whether IELTS, TOEFL or other evidence of English proficiency is required. They should not assume that every programme requires an HSK certificate.

3. Which HSK level should students target when preparing an application for 2027?

Students should set their target according to their intended programme:

  • If you are just starting to learn Chinese, build a solid foundation and explore programmes suitable for your current proficiency.

  • If you have achieved HSK 3, continue working towards HSK 4 while checking the admission requirements of your preferred university.

  • If you have achieved HSK 4, check the minimum score requirements, your intended subject and whether HSK 5 may be necessary.

  • If you have achieved HSK 5, you may be able to consider a wider range of programmes, but you must still meet other academic and admission requirements.

Students applying for the 2027 intake should pay particular attention to the university's official admission notice for that academic year. Requirements published for the 2026 intake should be treated as reference information and should not automatically be assumed to apply in 2027.

4. Does a higher HSK level guarantee university admission?

No. HSK is one factor used to assess language proficiency, not the only factor determining admission.

Depending on the university and programme, applicants may also need to meet the following requirements:

  • A high school graduation certificate and academic performance requirements.

  • Minimum HSK scores or other language qualifications.

  • Personal documents and supporting paperwork required by the university.

  • Entrance assessments, interviews or additional requirements, where applicable.

  • Specific eligibility criteria for scholarship applications.

Before applying, students should identify their preferred university, subject, language of instruction and intake period. This helps them avoid preparing for the wrong language level or submitting an incomplete application.
